The environmental project implemented by DMO Karakalpakstan in Arbashy village, Nukus District, continues to advance, focusing on the restoration of degraded land and the introduction of sustainable land management practices.
During the initial phase of the project, the condition of the soil and the natural characteristics of the area were assessed in collaboration with relevant specialists. The results of studies conducted by the Centre for Agrochemical Analysis of the Republic of Karakalpakstan were also obtained. These findings helped assess the condition of the land plot and identify the next steps.
The next milestone was the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation with Berdakh Karakalpak State University. Within this partnership, work is underway with researchers from the Faculty of Biology to identify plant species best suited to the local soil and climatic conditions.
The project has now entered its next practical phase. Soil cultivation and land preparation are underway on a 3-hectare plot. A 1-hectare section of this area is planned to be developed into a plant nursery for growing species adapted to local conditions.
Based on the research findings and scientists’ recommendations, a list of plants and seedlings for planting will be determined. This approach will help ensure that the natural characteristics of the area are taken into account and increase the likelihood of successful plant establishment.
The project aims not only to restore a specific plot of land but also to establish a demonstration model of sustainable land management. The experience gained may subsequently be applied in other areas of Karakalpakstan.
The project is implemented by the DMO Karakalpakstan Public Association, with support from the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), within the framework of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
